More in the Family
Inspired by the textile scholarship of R4TH and AAPC, the trolling of the family archives continues with an image of a (Navajo?) blanket from my Great Grandmother from the early 1900's, now in my Mom's possession. Speculation about it's origins in the family persist, but it is believed to have possibly come from New Mexico. Strange color, reminiscent of a Cactus Cooler....

High School Kenton
Family leather document case recently repaired and reconditioned. The case itself says Kenton, but I can't find any other information thus far. There are some illegible scribbles on the interior, probably from my brother circa 1985. It was also my document case during my High School days. The final image is before repair at Mike's of Noe Valley.

Ballston
Pair of Ballston socks picked up in Bolinas. The shop owner informed me that Ballston has been been making socks in the USA since 1918. Ballston is the house brand for companies like Woolrich and LLBean. The difference? No name on the sock, and only 6 bucks.

Bolinas
One of our favorite small towns in Northern California, Bolinas is known for it's reclusive residents. Any street markings showing the way to Bolinas have been traditionally removed from Highway 1, so you either know where it is, or you're gonna miss it. Before it became Bolinas, the Coastal Miwok Indians inhabited the area. The Coastal Miwok were not recognized as an official nation until 2000. Other favorite small Northern California towns with posts include, Point Arena, Boonville, and Trinidad. Hopeful future posts to include Inverness, just north of Bolinas.

Family Favorites
Family Pueblo pottery now in the collection of VM at TN hq. I'm not sure of the origin, but I think it is Hopi, research showing that the Navajo being more nomadic used baskets. These pieces were originally collected by my Great Grandmother in the very early 1900's, passed to my Grandmother and on to Mom. I believe there are a few more pieces, perhaps some images can be procured. Related Great Grandmother post HERE and HERE

American Tracking
Ornithology at it's finest, KM sends a few picks from the field. From KM, "This is a ferruginous hawk (notice the iron colored (brown red) legs and wing patches). There is also a roadrunner and American kestrel like a lil pocket falcon. Note the glove is because they like to bite."

Moguli Kilim
New in house Kilim keeping the kitchen just a little bit warmer. Picked up at Nomad Rugs just around the corner from our place. 100% wool, vegetable dye. The Mogol weavers are a little known ethnic group from northern Afghanistan who are descendants of the Mongols who invaded this region in the 13th century. They have been living in this refugee camp in Pakistani Baluchistan for the past 16 years. Proceeds from the sale of this rug benefit Barakat Inc.
